COVER FEATURE: How to feed a boomer
Nutrition has a pivotal role in the health and anti-aging efforts of baby boomers. Soon-to-be-seniors are using nutrition to take the sting out of age-related complaints including pain, memory loss, fatigue, indigestion, and declining vision. And food companies are creating foods and beverages as solutions to boomers’ chronic ailments – heart health, diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, and joint issues. A side bar will highlight spices, flavors and new technologies available for enhancing flavor and taste of functional foods targeted to boomers.
BEVERAGES: Cocktails as health food?
Wine for better eyes? Beer to help manage blood sugar? Although drinking more than moderately puts us at risk for a number of diseases, alcoholic beverages do have compounds that, when used in moderation, can have a beneficial effect. Now that's the spirit!
VITAMINS/MINERALS: Protecting your eyes
Foods such as spinach, kale and other dark, leafy greens were associated with a decreased of age-related macular degeneration. That’s because they’re rich in beta-carotene and other antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc oxide, cupric oxide) and especially the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. We’ll analyze more-processed food products also eyeing this health benefit.
NUTRITION BEYOND THE TRENDS: Fiber
The role of fiber in the modern diet has evolved. No longer just an aid to intestinal transit, fiber is equally valued for its prebiotic functions and promotion of overall intestinal health.
