This is our at-the-show-issue for Pack/Process Expo
Cover Story: Wal-Mart’s packaging scorecard
Ten months into Wal-Mart's newest mandate for the food industry, its Packaging Scorecard, we’ll look at how processors are reading and responding to the mandate and some of the steps they’re taking to green up their packaging. How hard is the giant retailer enforcing and evaluating it in deciding who gets to be a Wal-Mart supplier? And what pressures are other retailers forcing on packaging? Also, a quick look back at Wal-Mart’s RFID program.
Product Development: The R&D team at Tyson
Tyson has become much more than a producer of broiler chickens. The global company adds convenience (and value) to its chicken, beef and pork products with marinated, precooked and specially packaged products. Hal Carper, sr. vp of R&D, tells us how the process works. Tyson’s new R&D center, the Discovery Center , crystallizes the company’s R&D efforts with product and process development, as well as consumer taste -testing.

Supply chain pain
We share the results and analysis of a survey we took in July with international accounting and business advisory firm Grant Thornton. The survey asked about the availability of supplies and reliability of suppliers, and it identifies other widespread issues in the food industry’s supply chain.

Coming Issues: Nominate a Processor of the Year or a top new food product
We end the year with two of our best-read features. Coming in November is our annual look at the best new packaged food products of the past 12 months. If you’ve tasted a new product that you think merits this special attention, e-mail me a note. In December we will honor our fourth Processor of the Year. Suggest to us a food company that has had a great year—with sound financial performance, new product innovation, state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and managerial excellence. In both cases, send a note to Editor Dave Fusaro at dfusaro@putman.net.
