Cover Story—Batch Processing for Non-Batch Operations
ISA88 and ISA95 together have become one of few manufacturing operation languages that allow various parts of the enterprise to communicate. In fact, they work so well that their application has spread beyond traditional batch manufacturing operations, and they are appearing in some surprising places.
Optimization and Data Acquisition
A double-barreled story. The DAQ story will examine how data collection software has become easier, and then how users are seeking new ways to verify the performance of their models, get more accurate and predictable plant performance and find root-cause analyses. Next, the optimization story will look at how users can take all this information and use it to optimize their applications with a variety of tools, including simulation.
Drives and Motor Controls
The drives and motor controls story will examine the two sides of technological debate between variable frequency drives (VFDs) and traditional control valves and the extent to which VFDs can replace valves.
Our Changing Profession
Part 2 of “Plant 2025.” The technologies in Plant 2025 will demand a different kind of operator and engineer—and the young people who will work there will expect a different kind of technical environment. How will these demands and expectations mesh, clash and play themselves out?
Plus our regular columns from our staffers Walt Boyes, Jim Montague, Dan Hebert, Katherine Bonfante and Keith Larson, and industry experts Béla Lipták, John Rezabek, Greg McMillan and Stan Weiner.
